The Central Government, under Section 176 of the Electricity Act, 2003, has introduced the Electricity (Amendment) Rules, 2025, to amend the Electricity Rules, 2005. These rules, effective from their publication date, redefine the role and ownership of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). ESS can now function independently or as part of generation, transmission, or distribution.
